Mamas, looking after a little person all day can take the best out of all of us. It’s important to remember to look after you, too. Here are my top tips on how to create time for YOU and what to do with it once you have it.
SET YOURSELF UP FOR THE DAY
Rise 20 minutes earlier than your baby (when manageable!)
Begin with a couple of rounds of sun-salutations or stretching
Do 5 minutes of pranayama practice. Belly breathing, Ujjayi breath or Nadi Shodhana
5-10 minutes of seated meditation (download a meditation timer app).
DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY
Incorporate those things every day that make you happy, and take time to relish and enjoy them. Maybe it is that cup of chai or coffee!
Surround yourself with people (may have to be digitally at this time) who uplift your energy
Don’t be afraid or too proud to accept help when offered.
Get outside in nature when possible. This will have a calming effect on both you and your bub.
Take some conscious diagrammatic breaths at certain times of the day. Make it a habit to come back to the breath in certain situations, eg. when driving the car or feeding your baby
Start to become aware of any unconscious repetitive unhelpful thoughts that may keep appearing, such as guilt, unworthiness or inferiority. The first step to change is becoming aware of them and not let them slip past your consciousness and to then realise that they are just ‘thoughts’ and not the truth or your true self.
Body scan during the day and in bed at night. Especially if your mind is racing and sleep is not happening. Start from your big toes and work your way up to the crown of your head, gently encouraging each body part to relax and let go
Finish the day in gratitude. List 3 things you are grateful for from the day
Try to keep in mind that powerful proverb ‘this too shall pass’ when having a tough moment/day.
